Renew you in 5 steps
There is a lot to embrace about being an older woman. Make-up and skin care for the mature woman aren’t necessarily about covering up age; it should be used to enhance the years.
Try these five easy ways to improve and refresh your appearance.
1 USE A HYDRATING MOISTURISER BEFORE BED
“At night is when our skin rejuvenates, the more hydrated your skin is, the better it looks,” says SC Artistry make-up artist, Simone Cohen. “Also, hydrate from the inside by drinking lots of water throughout the day. As we get older, our skin is prone to dehydration. Dehydrated skin looks tired, lines look deeper and it can appear quite dull. “More moisture will plump up the skin, making it feel firmer and more radiant.”
2 USE A LIQUID ILLUMINATOR
This dewy magic can be mixed into your foundation or applied on top and will give your skin a glow,” says Ms Cohen.
“Illuminators are a great way to boost the radiance in your skin; this will draw attention away from lines, open pores and general dehydration.”
3 WEAR A PRIMER WITH A HIGH CONCENTRATION OF SILICONE
“More silicone will allow your foundation to glide over your imperfections, wrinkles, scarring and pores,” says Ms Cohen.
“Primers will also help keep your make-up lasting longer and be a barrier between your skin and make-up. It will also give you some protection. Primers with a green undertone will help if you experience any redness in your skin — a common result from sun-damaged skin.”
4 USE EYE CREAM
“One of the best ways to ward off fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet around the eyes is investing in an eye cream, as the signs of intrinsic ageing, caused by hormonal shifts and metabolic slowdown after age 30, appear most evident in the delicate eye area,” says Christine Anderson, registered nurse at Liift Aesthetics.
5 ESTABLISH A SKINCARE ROUTINE
“Use cosmeceuticals with active ingredients, including an antioxidant, such as vitamin C, in the morning and vitamin A, such as retinol, at night,” says Ms Anderson.
“It is essential to use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, applying it to the face, neck decollete and hands; these are the common areas most people forget and are the real age tellers.”
And two more more age-defying make-up tips:
1 WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY
“Some women think that because they do not spend time in the sun, they do not need sunscreen. However, every minute that your skin is exposed to the sun adds up. Sun damage is the No. 1 cause of ageing.” — Christine Anderson, Liift Aesthetics
2 GO EASY ON THE EYE SHADOW
Eyelids droop and crepe with age. While make-up should be used to enhance certain zones and deflect from other areas, put a little thought into what goes where. “Sometimes eye shadow can seem a little heavy, especially as the eye area tends to lose elasticity as we get older,” — Simone Cohen
